Want to do US a favor?

Dear Reader,

A good 70 years ago the US helped Europe to get rid of a monstrous idea. The idea was fascism. It had followers in many European countries.

And after the war the USA and its allies helped Europe to learn, that fascism isn’t an option. One of the educational tools were the Nuremberg Trials. Those made clear, that crimes against humanity are neither acceptable, nor excusable. And that there is no legal loophole, no wiggling around. “I had to follow orders” is not an excuse. “It was legal”, is not an excuse either.

Now a monstrous idea is popular in the USA. And that monstrous idea is torture.

If you need proof, please see Dick Cheyney saying “he would do it again in a minute”, or CIA Director John O. Brennan defending it, or former CIA Director Michael Hayden. Not to forget the most stupid president ever.

Sadly, a majority of Americans seems to agree. At least according to the survey here. And they have forgotten, what one of the last American politicians, who had been tortured himself, Senator John McCain, reminded us of in 2007:

… that some Japanese were tried and hanged for torturing American prisoners during World War II with techniques that included water-boarding.
“There should be little doubt from American history that we consider that as torture otherwise we wouldn’t have tried and convicted Japanese for doing that same thing to Americans,” McCain said during a news conference.

So, I am asking a favor. We need You to help the USA to learn? As a quid pro quo, so to speak?

We need trials, that proof to Americans and the world, that torture is unacceptable. The people, who authorized and ordered torture, need to be prosecuted. Our own government and juridical branches are unwilling.

We need citizens from Europe to file charges against:

  • George W. Bush and Dick Cheyney
  • Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice
  • Secretaries of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates
  • Attorneys General John Ashcroft, Alberto Gonzales, Michael Mukasey
  • CIA Directors George Tenet, John E. McLaughlin, Porter J. Goss, Michael Hayden
  • Directors of National Intelligence John Negroponte and John Michael McConnel

We need prosecutors all over the world do their job. And they need you to tell them.

Americans have to re-learn, that torture is not acceptable, and not excusable, and cannot be legal.

If in doubt read this WikiPedia article. Especially “Article 2: There are “no exceptional circumstances whatsoever” where a state can use torture and not break its treaty obligations”.

Would you do us the favor?

I hope you do. And that you do not wait, until a friend or a member of your family is tortured. Because by then it will be too late.

Stay sane,

Engine Room
